Easy on the pedal | While we’re familiar with the dangers of speeding, did you know that slowing down is not only safer but it’s also more cost-effective – particularly on the motorway? The optimum speed for most cars is 55mph, so driving faster will result in higher fuel consumption and more emissions. It’s a win-win situation.
Give your car a little TLC | In many cases, motorists will put off basic car maintenance, including self- check-ups, until a problem arises. It is easy to save car owners from an expensive bill by performing routine inspections like checking the tyre pressure, oil level, aircon and lights.

Ditch the phone | Did you know that drivers are four times more likely to be in a crash if they use their phones? It’s easy to get distracted and change the playlist or check a notification, and so the best thing to do is try and switch your phone to a ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode. If you must use the phone for GPS, make it a point to set it up before you begin your journey. As of 2022, it is illegal to use a phone while driving and if caught, are at risk of 6 penalty points and a £200 fine!
Long trips? Take a break
The Highway Code recommends that drivers take a 15-minute break every two hours. Even if you just stop for a few moments and stretch your legs, it will serve as a refreshing break from the road.
No more unnecessary idling
Another great habit to break this year is idling with the engine running. Leaving the engine running is illegal; according to Rule 123 of The Highway Code, ‘You must not leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road.’ So, this resolution will help you avoid the risk of a fine and also help keep the air clean!
